7 steps to getting a promotion

4 February 2022

If you want to enjoy a satisfying career, and achieve all your personal goals, it’s important that you have a plan in mind. And this means that it’s never too early to start thinking about your next move up the career ladder. In fact, when it comes to securing a promotion, the earlier you start to consider it, the better.

Take Control Of Your Career Progression

It’s vital that you take ownership of your professional life as soon as possible: after all, nobody else will take care of this for you. Being able to visualise the direction you want your career to take is key to formulating the right plan for achieving your objectives, and knowing the next best tactical step allows you to progress at the right pace.

However, moving up the career ladder is not as straightforward as simply asking for a promotion at your next performance review. There is important work to undertake beforehand, which will greatly increase your chances of getting the role you want.

1- Decide Your Timeline.

When you have a clear vision as to where you want to end up, you can calculate the steps you will need to take in order to get there. This means that you can work out your timeline, and determine when you need to move up a level.

2- Speak To Your Line Manager

This can prove extremely valuable, as your line manager should be able to give you the constructive advice you need to progress professionally. Ask them what you need to do in order to improve your chances of meeting the criteria for a more responsible role, and if there are any current behaviours that you need to improve.

3- Keep Track Of Your Achievements

Consider this an ongoing part of your professional toolkit: keeping a record of the value you have added to projects or other aspects of working life will help you to call on the best examples when you apply for a new position.

4- Get Responsible

Ask for opportunities to demonstrate your professional commitment and skills by taking on more responsibilities. Not only will you be recognised for having a positive, pro-active attitude, but doing so can also add valuable experience for your CV.

5- Be Proactive

Don’t just passively wait to develop the skills or knowledge you’ll need for career progression, but instead seek out the training you need. Taking the time to learn more about your company or industry sector, or studying extra courses can be the stand-out element that speeds up your journey to your ideal role.

6- Get Your Voice Heard

Make sure the right people start to notice your capabilities, by speaking up when you have value to add. Contributing ways to improve processes or sharing creative ideas about a project will get your name known in your organisation as a bright thinker who cares about the business’ success.

7- Know The Competition

Whilst it can be appealing to stay at the same company, you can help to get the best for your career by keeping tabs on competing firms. See what opportunities they offer, and decide if their roles would be a better fit for you. Knowing your worth in the open market can also motivate your current employers to want to keep you, and help to tailor the in-house opportunities to better fit your goals.
